Wechselwirkungen – Kunst im Kontext der Inklusions debatte (Interdependencies – the role of art in the debate on inclusion)
Amanda Cachia will discuss her critical dis/ability curatorial practice, and her approach to the politics of creative access. The idea is to advance a curatorial model for a contemporary art exhibition that can be made accessible to an array of complex embodiments, where, for example, American Sign Language, captioning, and written and audio translations of sound and image are embedded into the material, structural and conceptual aspects of the exhibition. The presentation will include an overview of Cachia’s recently curated exhibitions, including Sweet Gongs Vibrating at the San Diego Art Institute (2016) in California, Flesh of the World at the University of Toronto (2015) in Canada, and LOUD silence at California State University Fullerton in Los Angeles and the University of California San Diego (2014-2015). She will also provide a preview of her upcoming exhibition at the Owens Art Gallery at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada, which opens in Fall, 2018, entitled, Automatisme Ambulatoire: Hysteria, Imitation, Performance.
